Hey Everybody! Well, we are 8 weeks away from the NAFPV 2014 event and things are really starting to get exciting! In the recent couple of weeks several new sponsors have signed on, including ReadyMadeRC, Canada Drones and TBS! This is on top of already confirmed sponsors, such as HobbyKing, Rotorgeeks, ImmersionRC and of course, our major sponsor, Fat Shark! So far there are over $5000 worth of prizes and ALL attendees have a shot at winning them!
Along with prizes for the races, every evening we will be giving out awards for special actions, such as “Worst Crash of the Day” and “Best Limbo”! This on top of a prize raffle! Early registration gets you additional raffle tickets, so register now! We definitely have something for everyone!
We have also written up an FAQ, which has been added to the first post on the NAFPV thread. We have included it here as well. We will add more as more questions come up.
Q. What are the dates? When can I arrive?
A. Anytime from Friday, August 22nd to Sunday, August 24th
Q. Where is it?
A. The site is in Collingwood, Ontario. About 2 hours North of Toronto. It’s on the site of the “Bygone Days Heritage Museum” near the corner of 10th Line and Sixth Street.
Q. Will the flying be a messy free-for-all?
A. No. Flight times will be scheduled, and pilots will “register” for 15 minute slots. We will track frequencies used during each time slot to avoid conflicts. All pilots must fly from the flight line, and must call out their frequencies to the other pilots before powering up equipment, out of courtesy. Outside of scheduled flight times, there will be free-flight hours, where we expect pilots to police themselves with regards to frequency usage. Pilots must still fly from the flight line during free-flight periods.
Q. Can I book time slots back to back?
A. Generally, no, to give everyone a chance to fly. Exceptions can be made if a time slot is particularly empty (Usually because everyone is watching Yuvski do something stupid/dangerous!)
Q. Is there camping on site?
A. Yes. We will also be listing a couple of motels soon, but for the full experience, you really need to stay on site to get everything!
Q. I’m coming up from the US, are they going to give me a hard time at the border?
A. No. We have crossed the Canada/US border many times with full FPV gear and never had a problem. Tell them you are going to a model airplane event in Collingwood, Ontario. They will take pity on you for being an overgrown child, and wave you through. Please make sure you have appropriate personal documentation(passports, etc) when crossing the border.
Q. Can I bring my family?
A. You are more than welcome to bring your family. Collingwood is a wonderful tourist town all year long, and has several areas of interest to keep your family occupied while you hang out with your FPV friends. That being said, please do not bring pets, and mind your children. Safety is of absolute importance, and we don’t want anyone’s weekend ruined.
Q. Will there be washrooms?
A. Yes. The site has permanent washroom facilities for men and women on site
Q. What about electricity to charge my batteries?
A. Yes. Outlets will be available, however they will not be near the camping area, so we cannot provide electricity for anything at your tent.
Q. Should I bring a generator?
A. We are doing our best to provide you with electricity for the things like charging batteries. Last year the generators were a distraction, caused a lot of noise, and got complaints in general, so we would like to avoid them this year. If you have a special power need, PM Yuvski or Tracks and we will try to help you come up with a solution.
Q. If I break my plane/multi am I pretty much done for the weekend?
A. Not necessarily. Dave, our friend from Rotorgeeks will be on site with a repair station. He has even offered to help complete repairs for free (though you will have to buy/provide the parts. Apparently he has kids to feed, or some nonsense.)
Q. What am I going to eat?
A. Like any good camper, you can pack a cooler full of food. The Collingwood area also has several restaurants and a pub or two. There are also several fast food places for you McDonalds addicts. Event registration also gets you a ticket for a barbecue dinner we will be throwing for you all on Saturday evening. We are also trying to arrange to have some barbecues available for your usage over the entire weekend (because you have to have FPV hotdogs, right?)
Q. Do I need a MAAC/AMA membership to come fly?
A. No. one of these memberships are not required. Both members and non-members are welcome to come.
Q. I’m a MAAC/AMA member, but this isn’t a MAAC field. Will I still be covered by MAAC/AMA insurance?
A. Although this is not a MAAC club field, we have taken the appropriate steps to organize the event and site so that as long as you follow MAAC/AMA rules, you will be covered. To clarify, this means we have set up a flight line, and we have permission to fly on this site. The rest is up to you.
